Hello there!

3 Quick Ways to Reinforce Fraction Vocabulary

To master fraction concepts, students need to understand fraction vocabulary. There are so many important terms to learn, and it can be overwhelming for some students to keep up with them all. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to keep fraction vocabulary fresh in students’ minds.

Fraction Word Wall

A great way to reinforce math vocabulary is by having a word wall. Word walls make excellent reference tools. Not only can your students refer to fraction vocabulary when needed, but you can also incorporate word wall activities into your lessons.

One quick word wall activity is to give students the definition of one of the words and have them figure out which word is being described.

Another idea is to pick out two word wall words and have kids describe how the words are related and different.

These vocabulary cards came from Jillian Starr on TPT.

Fraction Videos

Have you heard of Math with Mr. J? Mr. J has an incredible collection of 5th grade math videos. His fraction vocabulary video doesn’t cover all fraction vocabulary, but it does cover some important terms and is perfect for reviewing fraction vocabulary.

Mr. J also has a mastery check video which gives students a chance to check their fraction vocabulary knowledge. During the video, Mr. J has students write their responses and then reviews the terms so they can check their answers. Even though this video is intended for 5th grade, 3rd and 4th graders could also benefit from it.

Boom Cards

One of my favorite ways to keep important vocabulary fresh is by reviewing with Boom Cards. With Boom Cards, students can practice again and again, making these a great way to review vocabulary throughout the year. Not only that, but students receive immediate feedback so they can learn from their mistakes. You can’t do that with regular flash cards!

Whether you do them all or choose just one, these fraction vocabulary activities will help students master important fraction vocabulary, leading to overall fraction success.
